ZUCK’S BIG WEEK

If you’ve never worked at a big tech company before, let me tell ya, the only thing more certain than free lunch are reorgs.

Your tenure can pretty much be measured by how surprised you are by a reorg.

The veterans are as unfazed as Kanye on a talk show:

Meta did some shuffling this week, but it looks like this re-org is a little different.

They consolidated their AI research and product teams into one (since the AI research team had previously been under the Reality Labs division), and moved it under their Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox.

Why does this matter?

Well, it’s essentially signaling that AI is now a top level company priority.

That’s right, people, AI is no longer the side chick. That’s for the metaverse now!

Zuck backed this up by announcing they are investing billions of dollars into Nvidia chips, with plans to acquire 600K chips by the end of 2024.

People are estimating this will end up costing them $9B.

Yeah, with a B!

The good thing is, for all their efforts, they’re still planning to open source what they come up with so everyone can build on top of it.

They spend, we benefit.

He also threw shade at OpenAI by calling out companies that start with the “open” mentality only to get less transparent over time:

“There were all these companies that used to be open, used to publish all their work, and used to talk about how they were going to open source all their work. I think you see the dynamic of people just realizing, ‘Hey, this is going to be a really valuable thing, let’s not share it.’”

Shareholders loved the news so much that Meta stock surpassed $1T in market cap this week.

Most people are quick to count Meta out of the AI race, but it looks like they're stockpiling a ton of compute and hiring aggressively for AI roles.

All we know is, it’s tough to bet against Zuck.
